About Okinawa

Okinawa, located at the Southern tip of Japan and to the north of Taiwan, consists of 160 large and small subtropical islands, with scenic nature and unique history and culture. It is known as the birth place of karate, and is home to Japan's longest living people, and to a huge and wonderful variety of rare species of wildlife.

Before it became part of Japan, the islands of Okinawa had been known as the kingdom of Ryukyu, which thrived in maritime trade with Japan, East Asia and Southeast Asia. After World War II, Okinawa came under the rule of the United States, until its reversion to Japan in 1972. This history of interaction with various regions has formed Okinawa's unique culture.

On your way to/from the conference venue, you can drop by Naha City, the capital of Okinawa, to stroll around lively Kokusai Street to look for a souvenir, or to taste local delicacies at Makishi Public Market. You can also enjoy a trip to Shuri Castle, a world Heritage Site, where the Kings of the Ryukyus used to live.

Onna village, the venue of the Pacific Graphics 2016, is conveniently located in the central part of the main island of Okinawa. This picturesque village is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Okinawa, with resort hotels, a superb view of the Cape Manza and an endless choice of idyllic white sandy beaches, and small private coves.

If you head to the north of the island, you can visit the fascinating Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, currently the second largest aquarium in the world. It is located in the Ocean Expo Park, which has other attractions, including the dolphin pool, Tropical Dream Center (a botanical garden), and a Native Okinawan Village.

We will not organize an official excursion program for Pacific Graphics 2016, but there are plenty of options to explore Okinawa on your own. Each hotel also offers various activities for guests, including diving, snorkeling, fishing and sea kayaking. Please inquire with the concierge at your hotel for details. Whether you enjoy deep sea diving, meeting whale sharks at the aquarium, or appreciate the history of Okinawa at the Old Palace, it will surely be a memorable experience that remains with you over time.

During the conference period, you can enjoy Okinawan cuisine and sake near the conference area. Including them, you can find your favorite food from Onna-son Restaurant Guide.
